I just watched this film on NetFlix and it was outstanding.
First of all, let me say that I have been a magic hobbyist for many years. I knew very well who James Randi(The Amazing Randi) was and I knew all about his efforts at psychic exposures over the years and his epic battle against Uri Geller. I knew that story and the film tells that story. But what makes the film fascinating is when it tells James Randi’s story and HIS deception. I didn’t know any of that.
I don’t really want to give any of it away but it’s kind of an “amazing” story that really focuses on deception. What is it? Who are the good guys? And does deception ultimately really matter?
One person in the film says: “People don’t believe what they choose to believe, they believe what they NEED to believe.”
That is something I find true about human nature.
In any case–if you’ve never heard of James Randi it is still a very worthwhile film. If you have–get ready for something very interesting. Something you probably didn’t know. It’s not so much his secret but how the secret fuels his own deception, I find fascinating.
Also the film has very moving moments. It’s thought provoking but there’s more than that.
If you have Netflix, check it out.
