i think you can be liked by players and still lose them at the same time.

for whatever reason the players just didn’t respond to him. now we can say a lot of that is just not having a starting caliber qb. and certainly that made a difference. at the same time, a lot of us said that as long as the defense and running game was in place the rams could contend for the playoffs. do we all just throw that out the window and say well it was all just about the qb anyway? i don’t think so. i think the former was true. the rams should have had the defense and running game to prop the qb position up until goff was ready. it didn’t happen. do we then just say well boras was the problem? ok yeah. you can say that, but then fisher had five years to find a coordinator. he screwed it up.

there were mistakes everywhere. the defense after 5 years still makes bone headed mistakes.

i’ll say this too. not saying the rams should hire harbaugh. i have no idea who they should hire. but i would bet that if harbaugh was coach, the players may hate him. but i bet they’d also perform for him. better than they did for fisher.

now how long would that last? how long before he wore out his welcome? probably yeah. he’d wear thin soon. but i bet he’d squeeze out more in 3 years than fisher would in the next five.

i think there’s a lot of truth to that. i didn’t see boras adjusting in game and between games to what opposing defenses were trying to do to the rams. i think that’s perfectly valid. and yeah some of that should have been in his control. a more experienced coordinator could have made those adjustments.

and it’s also true that some of those things were out of his control. having a backup qb who was limited and then going to a rookie qb. it’d be hard for anyone to cope with that. especially on a team as young as the rams.

i would also add that i suspect gurley didn’t prepare for the season like he should have.

i would also contend though that there are things fisher could have done to mitigate those things. if they were out of sync, they could have done things differently to prepare for the season. for example giving the first team more reps in the preseason. not putting gurley in bubble wrap. would that have made a difference? i don’t know. after 13 games they’re still out of sync. they also could have hired a better coordinator. although i should say that i was in favor of the hire. i wanted continuity but was not aware he was so incapable.

i do think another coach could be better prepared to do that than fisher would. that is make adjustments on the fly. fix the running game. and get goff ready to be the franchise qb he was drafted to be.
