Growing up as a big kid, my heroes werent qb’s or rb’s they were lineman. Being a die hard Ram fan that meant Irv Pankey and Jackie Slater. I’d heard Irv Pankey was coaching locally and a few Sundays ago I saw him in WINCO. I said screw it and approached him and his wife, and honestly dude couldn’t have been nicer.
I asked his wife if she’d take a picture with my phone of us together. She happily agreed, and like the Homer I am, I put it up on Facebook. Well the next day a girl I grew up with, and is a friend of mine on Facebook contacted me. I guess she’s a secretary at the JC and knows him. She mentioned to him that she saw him on Facebook with me.
Well that’s when it gets cool.
He went home and got a football card and signed it to me and had my friend deliver it. She said he was really flattered, because let’s face it, dude probably isn’t remembered by many [in St. Louis], he was a lineman, and we live in Raider/49er country. She said he doesn’t even sign autographs anymore because dealers are always sending him stuff in the mail, and he just chucks it. He knew I was legit because I was babbling about games and players of his career that really only a big fan of his would know. Anyway Irv Pankey is a CLASS ACT.
