in my mid 20’s, while hanging out at a trendy sfo restaurant/bar with a buddy of mine after work, who was born and raised in sfo and is a die-hard niners fan, i spotted bill walsh dining with an extremely attractive woman. armed with a few drinks under my belt i decided to go over to walsh and interrupt his dinner, to tell him that the rams would be taking the nfc west that year, that the niners were going down, it was right before he start of the 1987 season, the rams had once again finished second to the niners the year before.
my buddy begged me not to go over, but i had made up my mind. when i got to walsh’s table i said “excuse me coach walsh, i’m a lifelong rams fan, and i just want to let you know that the rams are going to take the nfc west this year.” i expected walsh to just brush me off, or show a bit of annoyance given i had interrupted his dinner, and was ready to head back to my buddy since i had my say. instead walsh stopped eating, introduced me to his wife, and said that the niners never looked past the rams, that it was a tremendous rivalry, and that they were always the team to beat in the nfc west. then he added that he thought 1987 would be a bit different, that the saints were quietly putting together a very competitive team and that both the rams and niners would have their hands full competing against them. he then wished me and the rams the best of luck.
i stood there, at a loss for words, the last thing in the world i expected was a response such as that, i had planned a hit and run, saying my piece and bolting. instead walsh was extremely gracious, engaging and was more than willing to talk football. i returned to my buddy, feeling half the size i was when i approached walsh’s table. moreover, i needed another drink because i actually liked the niners at that moment!
the saints finished 12-3 that year, one game behind the niners, and made the postseason for the first time in their history.
