Somethin I’ve always wondered about. Somethin I never quite ‘got.’ — How can a head coach be a great offensive mind — and NOT also be a great defensive mind? And vice-versa.

How can that be? If ya know offense, dont you also have to know defense? And vice-versa. I mean they are intricately related. If you know how to attack with an offense, dont you also know how to defend an offense?

I mean, like…does a chess-master only know how to make offensive moves? Dont you either know chess or not. Its not really about ‘offense’ or ‘defense’ is it? Its just about moves. I dunno.

Seemed to me Bill Walsh woulda been a great defensive coach or a great offensive coach.

Now special teams, i can see being a world of its own, but offense and defense? They just seem super-related to me.

So how can McVay not also know all about defense? How can Wade not also know all about offense?

Offense and defense start with different mind sets. Let’s say offense is creative and defense is destructive? Even in chess, some players are better attackers and some are better defenders.

It is not all or nothing. Some skill sets just work better on one side of the ball. I am sure McVay knows defense and Wade knows offense.

He probably understands defense in terms of how to attack it. But coordinators from both sides are experienced specialists, and if you are going to call games against either side, I guess you better be an experienced specialist too.

As it stands McVay’s worst games this year (IMO) were against savvy old timer defensive coordinators (Patricia with Detroit though they won that one, Fangio with the Bears, Schwartz with the Eagles). (That’s not a big complaint, they were 13-3 for the first time since 99, which in case you’re counting is 19 years.)

I just think it’s all a testimony to the benefit of long-time hands-on experience.

I mean, could you both prosecute and defend a case? (Not the same case at the same time, you know what I mean.)
