Texas prosecutors have filed a motion to revoke Adrian Peterson’s bond and have him re-arrested after the Minnesota Vikings running back allegedly admitted to smoking marijuana while he is awaiting trial on a felony child abuse charge.
A prosecutor in Texas is seeking the arrest of Minnesota Vikings star Adrian Peterson after he admitted to smoking a “little weed” Wednesday when submitting to a drug test, according to court records obtained by USA TODAY Sports.
The issue relates to the conditions of his $15,000 bond while free on a felony child abuse charge. Peterson submitted to a urinalysis Wednesday and admitted to an employee of the drug-testing agency that he “smoked a little weed.”
“In light of this statement, and the fact that it was made during the urinalysis testing process, and the term ‘weed’ is a common slang term for marijuana, the state argues that the defendant has smoked marijuana while free on bond for the current offense,” the Montgomery County District Attorney’s office wrote.
But that might not happen until next week at the earliest because of a controversy involving the district attorney, Brett Ligon, and the judge in the child abuse proceeding, Kelly Case. Ligon wants Case recused as judge in this case because he allegedly referred to Ligon and Peterson’s attorney, Rusty Hardin, as “media whores.”
A hearing on Ligon’s motion to recuse Case had been scheduled for Friday but has been postponed. The government’s motion to revoke Peterson’s bond can’t be heard until it’s decided whether Judge Case will be recused, said Mary Flood, spokeswoman for Hardin.
“The motion to revoke Mr. Peterson’s bond will come up only when we know which judge will hear the case and then the defense will respond,” Flood told USA TODAY Sports.
Peterson remains free on bond in the meantime.
