    8-0

Ramik Wilson game ball for the strip/fumble that won it

I thought the Rams adjusted well in the 2nd half

With 2 sacks, Donald has 10 in 8 games. After a slow start, the Rams won a competitive game. Gurley and Goff had good games. Reynolds had a good game and Everett flashed.

They did well for playing an away game.

What? They were at home? Really? Then why all the screaming GB fans, drowning out everyone else!!

    ;>)

Love that they won. Love that they’re 8 and 0. Donald and special teams came through again for them, and I think they may have to find a way to get Reynolds more involved, even when Kupp comes back. He’s a keeper.

Goff seems to have returned to earth a bit after a crazy start. I was thinking, after the first few games, he was really living up to his “first pick” status, and I’ve been too hard on him. Just throwing the ball lights out back then, and he seemed to have fixed his biggest problem over the previous two seasons (IMO): not leading his receivers. But the last two games . . . he’s playing good enough to win, but not “first pick” good.

    Hope he turns this around.

    Some other brief observations:

Cooks is an excellent receiver, but he’s not a jump ball guy. He’s not going to win many contested throws. You have to utilize his crazy speed and quickness and throw him open. He’s not the receiver who wins with DBs draped over him.

Not sure if Peters is still hurt, but he has not impressed since the injury. Hill is a liability in coverage too. I think the Rams still have some work to do in the offseason at DB, even if all starters return healthy. But the great thing about this team is their core is really young, and free agents are going to want to come to LA. So they could get even better in 2019, which is scary for the league. DBs, edge rushers, TE . . . and I’d bring in some young depth for the o-line too — FA and draft. The future is seriously bright for the Rams.

Goff showed me a lot this game. I feel like he grew. Under duress and constant pressure, he made some great throws. He also has this nifty “escape the pocket and run out of bounds” for a 2 to 5 yard gain- move. Didn’t know he had that.

It was a playoff type game. Green Bay had two weeks to prepare. Great “experience” type win for this team.

That being said… they better play better than this if they wanna beat the Saints.

just got back and watched the fourth quarter.

well. the bye week makes a difference. green bay looked fired up at the beginning of the game. they had time to come up with a game plan against the rams. almost worked.

rams really miss cooper kupp. he makes those 3 wr sets really work. i like reynolds. but the rams lose something with kupp out.

donald. when he wasn’t sacking rodgers, he was constantly in his face. 10 sacks at the half. wow. and that’s after a slow start.

peters. the rams should not re-sign him. at this point. maybe he’s hurt. maybe he gets healthy and turns it around for the last 8 games. we’ll see.

gurley. coulda had 2 tds and kept him on pace to break the record. but unselfishly kneels down to run out time. how cool is that? smart unselfish player.

goff. no it wasn’t the greatest game. i think we’re becoming spoiled. still had a rating of 111.0 and ypa of 8.4. and it’s important to remember he’s only 24 years old…

Goff outplayed Rodgers in an ‘away game’ environment.

    I’ll take it.

The Packers were in a dime defense for most of the game.

In an effort to slow the Rams’ offense down, defenses are loading up against the pass and inviting the Rams to run.

And it’s been working to an extent, but the Rams have been able to overcome it eventually. I wish the Rams were more effective running against it early though.

It would appear that everyone thinks Gurley did the right thing by staying out of the endzone at the end. Announcers, pundits, etc. etc. But I’m not so sure. Moot point, of course, cuz they won — and, again, that’s awesome. The entire season has been awesome. But I think I would have run it in for a TD anyway.

Up by 2, that puts them up by 8 even before the extra point. Make the extra point, and it’s 9, and there’s seconds left on the clock. That’s not enough time even for the great Aaron Rogers, and as well as the Rams D plays in the 4th . . . I’d trust them to stop him.

If the idea is, well, you can make a huge mistake on the extra point, or the kickoff, or somewhere else . . . . well, they could have goofed kneeling for the last play too. And then GB has the ball, down by 2, instead of down by 8 or 9. Plus, there’s the psychological aspect of playing aggressive football through the whistle.

Yeah, I know I’m all out on an island on this one, and it doesn’t matter . . . but I’d rather see the Rams win going away than playing it oh so safe.

    Just my two cents.

i don’t know that he exactly outplayed rodgers… but he definitely held his own. again. only goff’s second season in the same system. he’s 24 years old. and came from a college system about as raw as a qb could be entering the pros. so i think this was a good game from him. he had lots of pressure. and this is just me guessing. but he probably saw things pre-snap and post-snap that he had never seen before. he’ll continue to learn. far from a finished product. far far far. i mean look at what other qbs were doing at a similar age. patrick mahomes aside.

It would appear that everyone thinks Gurley did the right thing by staying out of the endzone at the end. Announcers, pundits, etc. etc. But I’m not so sure.

the chances of the packers coming back either way were very slim. but this is what would worry me the most. injuries. i don’t want to see a defensive players tweaking a muscle or snapping a ligament because they had to go back on the field. the chances of that happening on a kneel down are far less. look at what happened to will fuller when the game was completely out of reach in the texans game.

i think he did the right thing.

Only watched the hilites so far.

Just seems like they have lots of ways to win games.

The defense isnt dominant, but how many modern defenses are? The defense usually seems to make just enough big plays to do the job. Same with special teams. And the offense is a top five offense.

    They have a shot.

Not sure how Barron wasn’t concussed on that safety. He must have at least felt it in his neck. Several Peters comments in this thread already, I’ll just add that not only does he get beat fairly regularly he gets beat in multiple ways. He gets beat on straight go-routes and he gets turned the wrong way by receivers running different cuts. Hill doesn’t make me feel confident either. Marqui Christian seems to have gained the coaches confidence this season. I don’t recall seeing him on the field this much in previous seasons. Donald is great even when not getting sacks. He’s on a ridiculous sack pace for a DT. Woods continues to make clutch catches. I thought Cooks was getting grabbed a lot all game. Reynolds with a couple of big TDS was a nice surprise. I thought this surpassed the the Seattle game as the o-lines most challenging game.

Also, the next three weeks are going to be brutal. So I’m just going to enjoy this 8-0 thing. Such a weird feeling to see the Rams winning like this. I love it.

Yeah, the Rams defense certainly have room to improve but what constitutes great defense might have to be redefined based on the new rules.

No matter how talented they are defenses aren’t going to consistently dominate decent to good offenses any more. I doubt if we’ll ever see a defense completely shut down an offense like, for example, how Buddy Ryan’s Bears and Eagles defenses used to do week in and week out.

    I agree with that.

#1, McV told Goff to tell the team not to score. So a lot of that was McV. Not to take anything away from Gurley, because he was a huge portion of that win. (Example: his sideline catch, the one that got reviewed, was as athletic a play as we could hope to see–I don;’t know how many Rams receivers, going back to ALL of them, could make that play, let alone running backs.)

#2, when you end the game you end the game. No mishaps, injuries, or other weirdnesses. The game is done, everyone goes home with the win, no more bodies banging, the element of chance is killed off. It is true that theoretically, Rodgers could have scored, added a 2 pointer, and then GB could have onside kicked. That’s not real likely but it was probably one consideration. More likely, you just want to end the game so that absolutely no mishap of any kind, including as you said an injury, has any chance of happening at all. Have nail, have coffin, have hammer, nail er shut.

well, i look at this defense compared to its contemporaries.

and while they may be ranked 7th in total defense, their average yards per play is in the bottom half. so that concerns me.

and it won’t be any easier these next three games.

i do think they’re improving. that’s a very good offense in green bay. and they were coming off a bye week. mike mccarthy is a helluva coach. he had 2 weeks to prepare for this defense. aaron rodgers is the best qb of this generation.

just one question. can marcus get his head out of his ass? don’t mean to be rude. but i think he’s capable of being much better than he has been. i think he knows it too. hopefully, he can turn it around because he’s shown before how good he can be.

Thanks, ZN. Rough year, to be sure. But Sundays with the Rams is a real uplift. Greatly look forward to it each week, and I’m loving rooting for an excellent team.

To be honest, I’d be happy if they were just competitive this year. I didn’t need them to be this good. Knowing they have a very young core, and a great young coach, and an organization that finally seems to know what they’re doing . . . . all of that would have sufficed.

But they’re arguably the best team in football at the half-way mark. At least Top Three. And they have a great shot at the Lombardi this season. It’s just an amazing turn-around.

Let’s see: Goff turns 25 next season, as does Gurley. Cooks and Kupp turn 26; Woods and Higbee, 27; Everett 25. A bit of age on the line, but some solid prospects waiting in the wings . . . Defense, same thing. A few smart FA signings in the offseason and they take care of most of that, and then there’s the draft. I honestly see the Rams as getting better through at least 2020. As in, they’re built for a nice run now. Potential three-peat, though the NFL is set up to make that next to impossible.

Again, their future is really bright. More than bright.

Yeah, its got weaknesses for sure. (and they might well derail it in the playoffs)
But its got quirky strengths too.
Its an odd defense. Not sure ive ever seen the like.

Not consistent. At times, gives away huge big plays. But they have enough playmaking stars to come up with big plays on their side. And so far anyway, they own the 4th quarter.

It’s not the 2000 defense by any stretch. That one was a train wreck all the time.

Yeah, I see some posters focusing on the negatives, and some posters just kinda ignoring the weaknesses, but i dont see much talk about the ‘uniqueness’ of this odd defense. Its a peculiar defense, imho. An odd mix of strengths and weaknesses.

Donald makes it unique, I guess. Without him its just a regular-old-mediocre defense.

But with him there’s always the chance/liklihood that there will be ‘enough’ big plays to win.

Yeah sometimes it plays with 70% of 110%.

Sometimes it plays with 111% of 110%.

Some say Talib will settle them down, at least when it comes to giving up stupid long passing plays.

But they do have playmaking stars. Littleton, Barron, Suh, even Johnson now and then, and of course Sir Donald the Ubiquitous. Quite a menagerie.

I saw only up to the safety, and then the highlights later. I am looking forward to watching Act II in its entirety.

But I will say that during Act I, I just kept thinking how much the Rams miss Kupp. I think he may be as responsible for the Rams’ extra gear on offense as much as anyone else.

With two weeks to prepare, I think the Packers studied the Rams well. At times, it seemed they knew what was coming at them. They overloaded the line on the left quite a bit in the first half. I think for that reason alone Gurley was running into the center. Then on the non-TD, they ran to the Packers right. On passing downs, Sullivan was getting schooled and Goff couldn’t step up. Gotta hand it to Green Bay…they prepared well and took it to LA at the start. It was like their Super Bowl.

But they still lost. This was a great test for the Rams. Once again, they adjusted well in the second half.

My concerns…the secondary, Hill and Peters in particular. Despite last week’s scrimmage, those two haven’t had a good game in weeks. I can’t wait till Talib returns.

Next to Donald, Cory Littleton is the defensive MVP. Dude is everywhere.

Next week, the Saints will be the biggest test of the season. I cannot wait.

Fascinating how you leave the 1970s Rams defense out of that. Have you been drinking?

    It’s about knowing your audience.

What would 9’er fans like you and wv know about the 70’s Rams defense? I’m surprised it was even in your rather tiny orbit.

I couldn’t use a 9’ers defense as an example of a defense that could completely stone an offense, because they never had one.

So I did the best I could.

Kudos for mentioning the great Rams defense of the 70’s, though. It demonstrates a knowledge of football history that rests squarely on the rudimentary level which is much higher than I gave you credit for.
