Just got home about 45 minutes ago from the Blue Hills Bank Pavilion in Boston where me, the wife and kids (they both are living in Boston; took way longer to get them and get to the venue than it should have. One more reason I hate the Red Sox) went and saw David Byrne on his American Utopia tour.
Wow. The guy is 66 years old and his voice sounds better than ever, and he’s still got moves! The band was tight and pretty unique; no one was stationary. Instead of a drummer behind a stationary drum set, he had like 8 guys walking around with snares and bass drums and bongos and god knows what else.
Google it if you are interested. If you get a chance to see the show, I whole-heartedly recommend it.
They played about half the songs from the new album and a really good selection of Talking Heads. My personal favorites were the Heads era “Slippery People” and the new “Doing the Right Thing”
He ended with a Janelle Monae cover called “Hell you Talmbout” where the names of young African American men killed by police are called out. I think that cemented his place as a “cool guy” in my daughter’s eyes.
Still wired from the two Iced Teas I had to drink on the way home to stay on the road. A 3 hour drive at damn near midnight is a different animal when you’re used to turning in before 11…
