Punter Johnny Hekker and the Rams’ coverage team have had a stellar season, already tying the NFL single-season record with punts downed inside the 20 with 46. With three games to go, Hekker will almost assuredly smash that record.
“I’ve said it before, but it really did creep up on us,” Hekker said Tuesday. “We didn’t really think about it. We definitely stay up to date on the numbers on the net [average] and everything, but the inside-the-20 thing was kind of a surprise when we looked at it and saw, ‘Oh damn, we’re at 40.’ And then notched another six on Sunday.”
Dave Zastudil set the current record with 46 punts downed inside the 20 in the 2012 season with the Cardinals. That year, Zastudil led the league with 112 punts, so 41.1 percent of his attempts were downed inside the 20. So far, Hekker has punted just 79 times to reach the record mark, which comes out to 58.2 percent of his punts getting downed inside the 20.
Hekker has also done a nice job of keeping the ball out of the end zone, as he’s had just one touchback this season. In 2012, Zastudil finished with eight.
Hekker is from the Seattle area, which makes each trip up to CenturyLink Field a family affair. He’ll have plenty of kin in the stands on Thursday night, which makes it a great time to break the record — something he will almost assuredly do.
“Hopefully I’ll get that one up in Seattle and do it in front of my family,” Hekker said. “That’d be pretty special.”
