Just a couple things I saw in the game. Watched it late last night when I got back from a family gathering.
Actually, I watched the 1st half and part of the 3rd. When it got deep into the bench, I lost interest.
Anyway, 2 guys looked very good to me:
1. Robby looked very good at LOT. I saw him give up part of a sack once, late in the half. But generally his pass blocking was sound: he’d have his guy walled off while the rest of the OL was being over-run. And his run blocking really is impressive. He can drive the DL, but he also gets to the 2nd level and blows LBs backward. Tell you what … right now I’d just as soon start him over Jake the Fraud Long.
2. Stedman Bailey is the real deal. He is what I love–a route runner who simply gets open. The first one of that species we’ve had since Torry. Damn, I wish he could start the season with us.
3. The rest of the OL sucks. Pretty badly. They’re all backups, so I didn’t study anything. But the pass blocking other than Robby was awful. Run blocking? Some good spots, but generally pretty poor.
4. Davis reminds me a lot of Clemens. Not a running QB, but a guy who can move around and do some things on the run. He might have a bit better of an arm. But he is only moderately accurate. If we end up with him in games, I think it will be 2013 revisited.
5. Defense looked better, though of course we don’t know what that means: 2s against 2s. I did like the general unit commitment to defending the run. Much better discipline and coverage of the LOS. I actually believe that, given adequate capability, stopping the run is a team thing, including scheme and coaching commitments. We’ll see if the 1s are ready for A P.
6. I really like our young DBs. They make mistakes, of course. But every DB in the league gets burned at times. I like their aggressiveness, their willingness to tackle, and their instincts. Joyner and Gaines are good young DBs, IMO. Are they ready for this year? Dunno, really. Hope so.
I dunno what more to say. Game 4 isn’t worth playing, really. We’ll see if we’re ready to go on Sunday.
By virtue of the absurd ...
