The NFL’s Catch Rule Got A Little More Complicated

The NFL published its updated 2016 rulebook this week, and here’s a list of some of the bigger changes. But c’mon, we all want to see what the ever-evolving, always-baffling catch rule looks like now, so we can pretend we have any idea what we’re talking about when there’s a catch controversy.

ESPN’s Kevin Seifert has highlighted the new wording in red:

This is classic NFL: attempting to introduce clarity by layering on exactitude, and in the process introducing even more opportunities for ambiguity. How will we define, precisely, the moment a receiver is “capable” of tucking the football or of turning his body? Will his already-extant momentum count as being capable of taking additional steps? What if I don’t want to see 3-2-7-Item 2?

We used to know what a catch was, what a fumble was. Who, invented the tuck rule? At least it had an expiration date. I blame instant replay. 😉

    It is beyond ridiculous.

The upside to being a Rams fan is heartbreak.

    Sprinkles are for winners.

I paraphrased it below. Its tricky alright. But its tough to write good laws.

    v

    ==================
Pass is complete, if player is inbounds and:

    A. Secures ball in hands or arms before ball hits ground, and

    B. Touches ground inbounds with two feet or any part of body other than hands, and

    C. Maintains control of ball after a and b have been fulfilled, UNTIL he
has the ball long enough to clearly become a runner, — ie,
when his second foot is on ground,
he is capable of avoiding or warding off impending contact of opponent,
    tucking ball away,
    turning up field,
    or taking additional steps

IF player has control of ball, a slight movement of ball will not be considered loss of possession

If player loses the ball while simultaneously touching both feet or body part to ground, it is not a catch

    tucking ball away,

I thought we did away with the tuck rule? Is this the evil scientists at CERN rewriting history?

Looks like the tricky judgment part involves deciding
    when a receiver is:
    “turning up field”
    or
    “tucking the ball away”

People might disagree on the exact instant
    either of those happens/doesn’t happen.

But how else are ya gonna write the rule?
There’s always gonna be some gray-area judgment part of it.

There’s ALWAYS going to be a gray area? In some ways that’s true, and in some ways not. It’s not all that clear. So as to whether or not there will always be a gray area, I don’t think it’s just simple black and white.
