    Remember the old days when a young quarterback would sit a season or two behind a veteran and learn the game?

    There is no time for that anymore.

    This is the ice bucket challenge. It’s cold. It’s sudden.

    There is no better example of how difficult the transition is from college to the pros than what is ahppening with Manziel right now. This kid made playing college football look like a video game. It was fun, exciting and seemingly easy for him.

    But the pros are smarter, bigger and faster. And that crazy scrambling doesn’t go so far anymore. A pass tossed up isn’t always brought down by a big receiver who can fight off the little defender. It’s really tough. There is so much to know, things to see, calls to make.

    Manziel is really struggling right now. It isn’t easy anymore. I wonder if he has the mental toughness to make it when things get difficult. Signs don’t look good when he’s flipping off the other team on national television. He needs to mature in a hurry and probably adjust his game a bit. I’m just not sure he can or will do that.

    In any case, it is a very interesting NFL story from a fascinating character.

    His lack of maturity may be the biggest hindrance to him becoming a good QB.

    Yeah, he can’t read defenses worth a lick but many college QB’s come into the league with that problem. There are a lot of gimmicky offenses used in college these days in which reading defenses isn’t a priority. That can be learned. It’s just a matter of studying film, taking instruction from coaches and practice.

    But maturity is different. Seems like most of the players that lack it coming into the league never get it.
