If you did his numbers for his 5 starts, they would pretty much be awful.
56.3% completions, 6.13 yards per attempt.
BUT they look a little better in the last 4 games. That is, once he gets used to starting and reps for it, he does better.
In the last 4 games—64% completions, 7 YPA.
Also if his current stats would have held, he would only throw 3-4 INTs all year.
People didn’t notice this as much because it’s not glaring, but if you watch, he has some play-saving improv in him.
And people think his arm is bad when in fact it’s no worse than a lot of Rams #2s (Feeley, Clemens, Davis).
The issue that makes people think his arm is really bad (when it’s more just mediocre) is that his accuracy is very streaky. Every game count on a few mole-killers from him.
He can be a steady “win ugly” type who a few times a game finds a way to rescue a play.
AND he is a smart, hyper-dedicated film junkie. So, he knows how to maximize what he is.
I think what will happen going forward is that the Rams will have Keenum, Mannion, and a 2016 draft pick at qb.
AND I will say this about CK—you WANT young qbs watching and learning from him. The film junkie/maximizer part of his “make-up” is very real. It would do the kids good to learn from him. Personally, I think he’s a qb coach in the making.
