from off the net, for discussion’s sake (ie. this is not a be all/end all statement, it’s conversation provocation

    CoachO

I tend to think there is plenty of talent on this roster that has not fulfilled its potential for a variety of reasons.

For example the cliche one hears constantly about the Rams receivers claims they are incapable of creating separation. But yet when they finally have a QB [Keenum] who understands that getting the ball to them “on time” exemplifies just the opposite. And it’s not a coincidence to me that they don’t drop passes when the ball is actually thrown where and when they’re open.

Tell me how good receivers can overcome QB play that has been as bad as the Rams the past two years.

Do you go to the games? Or just watch them on tv? Because if you are in the stands and watch the routes develop, you would see receivers running routes downfield, getting open and wonder what the QB is looking at. It started with Clemens, and continued right thru this year. Whether it was Quick running the dig route when Clemens was the QB, or Bailey running to soft spots in zone coverage with Davis, these guy’s just didn’t get the ball thrown to them.

Now take this year, and I can’t even count the number of wide open receivers Foles just either flat out missed or didn’t see in the first place. Or when he did see them the ball got there so late the routine catches became contested.

I think CoachO makes a good point, though still, none of that is an argument against drafting or signing a WR for 2016.

They probably lost Bailey, and Quick may never recover to the point of being effective.

That leaves them with Welker, Britt, Tavon (who I don’t really count as a pure receiver), and Marquez.

They need to add a guy

I think that as a group, our WRs can’t be described as anything more than average. I think we can draft two WRs and two TEs in this draft that are better than what we have. Doing that transforms our pass catchers into a strength. I believe creating another strength is the way to go.

Well, I hate to get all RFL here, but I don’t think this will get fixed in one year. I agree with the Adequate Hypothesis which argues that the WRs are okay. I think they are. But I think a #1 WR makes them better than okay. I agree that Bailey is a goner, and Quick is doubtful. Is Welker even back next year? They need a #1 and another depth guy. And a TE.

But they will still be limited because they have QB issues. Mannion needs to carry a clipboard another year, I would think, and Foles and Keenum…well, we just saw that movie.

I would sure like to know what Weinke thinks.

With a better QB, I think the WR “problem” solves itself.

Although, I wouldn’t turn down better WRs. Look at what Fitzpatrick has done in NY with Decker and Marshall.
