Chargers have the best option
San Diego’s latest depth chart released Monday still has Fluker at the right tackle spot he’s occupied for the past two years and Barksdale behind him. But Fluker has lined up at guard in each of the Chargers’ three preseason games and now openly acknowledged this could be his new role (albeit in the vaguest way possible).
The Bolts putting their best five linemen on the field seems inevitable, considering Johnnie Troutman’s ineptitude at right guard last season. A Fluker-Orlando Franklin guard tandem gives the Chargers a terrifying arrangement of oversized ex-tackles.
The upside of moving Fluker inside and allowing Barksdale to play with the starting quintet come Week 1 should be too much to ignore.
Barksdale’s price in free agency cratered despite becoming one of the best run-blocking right tackles in football the past two seasons, and with moving shakier tackles to guard becoming akin to starting pitchers hoping to find their niche in the bullpen, the Chargers cannot give Troutman a third season as a starter with this option on the table.
