    History Quiz for yuze people.

This subject was so controversial in its day,
that it resulted in the 1927 quote below,
    AND the 1977-8 quote below.

    Can you name that controversy?
    (I’ve “XXX’d” out the give-away)

I iz reading a book on it.

I will give you one clue — it has
nothing to do with the Warner-Bulger
    controversy.

    ——————-

    “…the subject has occasioned a controversy of extraordinary bitterness;
for a parallel one must go back to the Dreyfus case…In American history,
perhaps nothing since the Slavery dispute before the Civil War has created
such violent differences of opinion among persons who would ordinarily think alike.
In two Boston clubs, to my knowledge, and probably in many others, members
have been forbidden by rule to talk about the XXX affair.
(Bruce Bliven, The New Republic, 1927 )

    “…In New York, a few days before August 23, 1977, the 50th anniversary of…
…’Plans by Mayor Beame to proclaim next Tuesday XXX day have been cancelled
in an effort to avoid controversy, a city hall spokesman said yesterday.’
There must be a reason why a case 50 years old, its principals dead,
evokes such emotion. It is not the kind of history that can be handled
    comfortably…”
    (Howard Zinn 1978)

Yes. Felix Frankfurter, then a harvard law prof, wrote a famous article about the case back in the 20’s :

It’s worth reading. Its long, but
I think it’s one of the best nonfiction essays I’ve
    ever read.
Lucid writing, clear, flawless analysis. As good as this kind of writing gets, imho.
