An interesting discussion this morning on local Boston sports radio. Albert Breer from NFL Network was on as a guest and they were discussing the AFC North as a whole as part of previewing the season. The discussion went to the Bengals and Dalton. A lot of similarities to what people say about the Rams- excellent defense and talent overall, how far can the QB take them, etc.
Breer said something along the lines of “there are no current ‘B-level’ contracts for QBs in the NFL today. You either have a rookie deal, a backup contract, or a really big one ($18-20M/year).” He said Kaepernick is probably the closest thing to it given there are clear out clauses for the 49ers after every season. He said the Bengals may be the team that creates a ‘B-level’ new deal for Dalton- something that either has out clauses, more upside/incentives, etc. In the end he said his gut was that Dalton will be allowed to get to free agency in 2015.
