For those that still like to use “yards” as a primary metric, the Rams defense ranks: Passing Defense: 7th Run Defense: 14th Total Defense: 9th This Rams defense wasn’t supposed to be a top-25 group. Through four weeks, they are top-10.

The Rams defense is allowing an average passer rating this season of 79.3. This ranks eighth in the NFL.

Stafford has had the following WRs. Calvin Johnson – Most Receiving Yards in a Season Cooper Kupp – Triple Crown Winner Puka Nacua – Only Rookie to have 39 Receptions for 501 yards in his first 4 games QBs don’t make WR great…but can make them Elite.

Matthew Stafford is playing some of the best ball of his career right now. He’s been surgical so far. A head-scratching decision or two but that’s not unusual. Some of these throws are so high-level.

    Cameron DaSilva@camdasilva
like, some of the best throws I’ve seen by anyone in the league this year. It’s unfortunate his numbers don’t reflect how well he’s playing right now.

Note: BTT = big time plays. TWP = turnover worthy plays

    J.B. Long@JB_Long

Did a little bit of study on this today…

[Stafford is] #1 in total BTT
    BTT% 2nd only to Allen
TWP% 5th lowest despite an aDOT significantly higher than any in the Top 5.
In fact, his aDOT is now up to 8th

    PFF 6 EPA 7 QBR 12

    Underlying metrics >>>> TD:INT

I have to admit he has surprised me. I didn’t like him much last year.

Fwiw PFF has him graded fairly high for the Colts game (78.2), while last year he was their second-worst ranked cornerback in the entire league. Plus of course other than the bonehead TD he gave up in Seattle, we can see he’s doing well.

PLUS Witherspoon is a great signing on top of it–PFF has him ranked 5th among all CBs.

The Rams secondary is one of the good surprises this year.

    Ramsā€™ secondary is currently ranked top-10, against the following: Metcalf/Lockett/JSN, Aiyuk/Deebo/Kittle, Chase/Higgins

[Stafford’s]Ā passing grade at Pro Football Focus is the fourth-best of any quarterback in the league, coming in at 79.6. Thatā€™s the fourth-best passing grade of his career, to put it into perspective.

He also has 12 big-time throws, according to PFF, which are passes ā€œwith excellent ball location and timing, generally thrown further down the field and/or into a tighter window.ā€ Thatā€™s the most in the NFL, three more than any other player, and his BTT rate (6.9%) is also the highest in the NFL.

This is where Stafford is truly elite, in my view: CBTT.Ā Ā  Clutch Big Time Throws.Ā Ā Ā  Not just BTT — but Clutch BTT.Ā Ā Ā  There is a difference.

Its a damned important measure of a QB, I’d say.

“Is he clutch” has always been one of my most important “boxes to check” when assessing a qb.

And of course we remember the 2021 post-season, where Stafford came from behind for wins in 2 playoff games and the super bowl.

But in addition to that, you combine his arm and his accuracy and you get all ofĀ  these lasers to the middle of the field we’ve been seeing. I’ve never seen a Rams qb own the medium range pass to the middle of the field the way he does.

Well, I think i agree.Ā Ā  Kurt may have some advantages over Stafford in some other areas, but I dont think even Kurt could do the ‘laser over the middle in tight windows’ at the same level Stafford does it.

Yes. Matthew Stafford is a good quarterback.

Some positions are easier to judge than others, and the secondary is hard. You see a DB only when he blows coverage, or when he makes a great play. Most of the time, you don’t see them at all because the ball doesn’t go their direction. So you don’t know why the ball didn’t go there. Was it because it was never intended to? Or because the DB was positioned so well that the QB went to the next read? It’s almost impossible to tell in real time, and difficult to tell with tape.

So I don’t know anything about Kendrick except he blew that one play against Seattle, and seems like there was a second one at one point, and I haven’t seen him since. I don’t know what that means.

All I know is that the secondary is performing better as a whole than I hoped for, and the Eagles suck. Basically, that’s all I know.

The Rams rank 13th in points scored, which may not seem great until you consider they’re the only team not to start a drive in opponent territory and their average starting field position is the 5th-worst

After last game, DT Aaron Donald has tied Von Miller for third-most tackles for loss in NFL history with 164. He is 2 away from passing Calais Campbell for second-most all-time.

Aaron Donald’s 22 total pressures are the most of any player on the defensive interior this season
