Just one point among others. But. I used to remember critiquing McV’s redzone offense. It was too average or below average in its results. Several seasons went by where this was true.

So here there are, without Kupp, and with a solid RB no one mistakes for elite. And…they lead the league in redzone scoring.

Took a fairly obvious problem area and improved it.

They did a lot this off season, including change up the offense in a lot of different ways. I swear, we’re watching one of the best Rams coaching jobs we’ve seen since we first starting following them.

That thought has crossed my mind since Sunday as well.

This is not a band of seasoned, vet pro-bowlers. And they are playing well. That game Sunday was winnable, and on paper, it should not have been.

McVay maybe is not a great psychologist when it comes to managing individuals, but he is a brilliant strategist, tactician, and group inspirational speaker. Seems like.

And even that just might have been a young qb. Other positions, he doesn’t show the same kinds of frustrations he did before with the qb. Except maybe Akers? But who knows on that.

    Except maybe Akers?

Well, that’s the question, exactly. Because if it IS true with Akers, then what have we got here? Is there a commonality between Goff and Akers? Or are these situations completely unrelated?

Outside of that, the only criticism I can muster of McVay is that his halftime adjustments don’t sing out to me as a strength (the Seattle game being a notable exception).

It sure seems like he is coaching the hell out of this squad, though. Long way to go, of course, but these two games have got my attention.

The Akers and Goff situations are different.

McVay’s complaint about Akers was that he wouldn’t ‘buy in’ to the system -presumably referring to his discontent with a running back by committee approach.  It was his attitude.

Goff just wasn’t savvy enough in McVay’s offense to make adjustments on the fly.  McVay said he always felt like he had to call the perfect play every down because Goff couldn’t make adjustments off script. It was more about QB experience than attitude.  McVay never questioned Goff’s willingness to do what was asked of him, just his ability to do it.

    Yeah, I think that’s a fair assessment.

I don’t think that was the issue. I thought that the issue was McV getting openly, publicly critical of Goff in the worst ways–and I don’t mean constructive criticism, I mean dismissive, angry stuff. On the sidelines, in front of the team, and so on. I think he got impatient with Goff’s development. One former Rams offensive coach said that McV knew how to tear Goff down, not how to build him back up. It became a confidence issue for Goff. In Detroit, he has a rapport with his coordinator and they communicate. McVay himself said that communication was an issue with Goff. Natually McV respects the much more veteran Stafford so those issues don’t come up.

I don’t know what it is with Akers. Now sure what that story is yet. So I don’t have any speculations about it.
