we were in Lahaina for the week before the fire…. we left Lahaina the Sunday before the town went up in flames on Tuesday…. we have visited that town few times on prior vacations….
my kid is fire inspector for a local Fire Dept in California. he noted the wind and dry conditions in that area while we were there…… the hurricane was approximately 650 miles south of Hawaii, thus parts of the island had windy conditions…, other parts were very calm including Lahaina. the winds got stronger after we left, even though the hurricane had moved farther away ( 800 miles ) at the time of the fire. the wind path must’ve changed and focused on the western part of Maui to stoke the fire.
very sad to see that town burn… a very special place for us…..
