The Rams jumped to the No. 3 seed in the NFC with their win over the Cardinals yesterday and improved their playoff chances from 89% to 98%

If the Rams beat the Pats and Jets, they’ll clinch a playoff spot. And if they win their next three, they’ll lock up the NFC West

Not to look too far ahead, of course…

Goff: “I responded exactly how I expected to. I’ve been through a lot of bad things in my football career before and I’ve consistently responded, and this was no different.”

Rams had a very nice game plan on both sides of the ball yesterday. Jared Goff was 18-20 on throws to Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp and the Defense kept Kyler Murray in the pocket—only 3 runs for 15 yards. Big win for the Rams out them back in 1st in the NFC West.

There is a reason it is called ZERO coverage— sometimes it means NO coverage.

Am I wrong to feel like the 8-4 Rams still haven’t played a complete game yet? Yesterday was close. Maybe PHI or TB wins.

But without a turnover or a special teams miscue, with offense and defense both locked in?

Seems like that performance(s) is still out there

It’s unbelievable how good the #Rams’ defense has been this year given (a) their depth chart at the edge and (b) their top two ILBs are on IR

    Rams Brothers@RamsBrothers
Over the last two weeks, NE returned 3 long punts (1 for a TD), had a lengthy kick return and blocked a field goal (returned for a TD). Also, Nick Folk has made 20 straight FG’s.

The Rams ST unit is completely overmatched.

How important is culture in the NFL? Look at what Brian Flores has done in Miami. Joe Judge with the GMen. Now Ron Rivera in Washington. Should be a strong signal to those in the market for coaches this offseason what the need to be looking for.

Rams jumped immediately into the top 3 in scoring in 2017 under McVay. Gurley had explosive plays from the backfield, Rams top 3 wideouts were a pick your poison situation for defenses and could roast whichever unfortunate CB3 was out there that day.

Continued in 2018 with McVay’s best offense to date and a Super Bowl appearance.

Dipped to 10th in 2019 due to OL, RB, and WR injuries. Noteworthy is that Gurley and Cooks in spite of injury were actually on the roster and did factor in.

2020 Rams rebuilt at those key positions and now we are sitting 17th. Why? Well in spite of an improved offensive line the replacements for the big two veteran losses have underperformed. Players matter.

Looking at the playoffs the Rams do have some guys who can give us better play than we’ve seen. In other words we can gain explosiveness with better backfield play (both Akers and Hendy) and at WR3 (Jefferson). And our OL has actually been solid so it’s not out of the realm of reason to think that our two young RBs who have good explosiveness can boost this offense IF we get more consistency out of them

There is a drop-off at RB from a healthy Gurley. There just is. Gurley would have been a HOFer if he had knees. I think they can get good production, and good ENOUGH production from Akers/Henderson, but there is a drop-off. Don’t know if it’s from 3 to 17, but there is a drop-off.

At WR, I think they miss Cooks’ ability to go deep, but again…not a steep drop-off there. It’s not like the Rams receivers are slow. They could do it once in a while.

Jared Goff’s average pass traveled 3.5 yards past the LOS Sunday – the lowest of any starter. And he still threw for 351 yards.

Rams had 253 yards after the catch – second most by any team in a game this season.

    Clash Of The Horns@RamfamPodcaster
we all know patriots are gonna have the same gameplan as they did in the Superbowl, beat up our offensive line and mess everything up for goff, defense will have to go man to man and stop the run. Toughen up defense its gonna be a long game

    Rams Brothers@RamsBrothers
One thing to keep an eye on for Thursday nights’ game: third down efficiency.

The Rams went 9-15 on third down vs. Arizona, which is 14% better than their average this year (46.71%). Converting upwards of 50% vs. NE could lead to another 450+ yard performance from the offense.

Matt Bowen is one of the best analysts at ESPN if you want quality content that goes well beyond just surface-level detail. In a recent article where he highlights the best cornerbacks and safeties at various roles in the defense, Bowen pegged John Johnson as the best “split-field” safety, referring to those who play the best when splitting the back end of the field with another safety.

“The Rams have played split-safety coverage on 35.2% of opponent dropbacks and rank third overall in quarters coverage snaps — which is an easy fit for Johnson given his downhill traits versus both the run and the pass. Johnson will cut the crossers, drive the in-breakers and showcase the transition speed to close in a hurry. Plus, he can fill the alley as a run defender on edge schemes.

With Johnson paired with rookie Kendall Fuller, the Rams now feature one of the top safety combos in the league. And in Brandon Staley’s system, they are set up to limit middle-of-the-field throws.”

In Thursday night games, Jared Goff has been at his best. He has 9 TDs and 1 INT in four games, including that ridiculous 465-yard, 5 TD night against the Vikings in 2018

    PFF@PFF
Aaron Donald is on pace for his lowest graded season in 4 years

He’s still the highest-graded defender in the NFL (93.0)

2nd-year Justin Hollins had a breakout performance in his game against the Cardinals

He posted the 5th-highest overall grade among Edge Rushers this week (min. 25 snaps)

    from https://theramswire.usatoday.com/lists/rams-patriots-week-14-stats-facts-2020/

Patriots run the ball more than any team in the NFL
Led by Newton, it’s no surprise that the Patriots run the ball – a lot. They lead the league with 398 rushing attempts, ranking third in yards, second in rushing touchdowns – Newton has 11 himself – and ninth in yards per carry.

On the contrary, they have the second-fewest pass attempts in football, as well as the fewest touchdown passes (8) and third-fewest passing yards. So this is an unbalanced offense that thrives on running the ball.

Question for the Rams based podcasters… Where’s all the Sebastian Joseph- Day hate now? Loud as hell when he has a bad outing but eerily silent when he plays his ass off. I see ya.

    Cameron DaSilva@camdasilva
After shadowing WRs lately, Jalen Ramsey should be back in his “star” role Thursday. The Patriots don’t have a No. 1 receiver. They’re also extremely run-heavy – more so than any other team.

The Rams secondary was tested in a big way the last 4 weeks, facing 6 big-name WRs.

They more or less shut each of them down with some incredible performances

The Seahawks, Buccaneers and Cardinals all have true No. 1 receivers on their rosters, and in the case of the Seahawks and Bucs, they have multiple players who would be considered No. 1 wideouts on most teams.

    DK Metcalf.
    Tyler Lockett.
    Antonio Brown.
    Mike Evans.
    Chris Godwin.
    DeAndre Hopkins.

All six of those receivers have one thing in common: Each one was kept in check by the Rams in the last four weeks. Not a single one of those players eclipsed 70 yards receiving. Only one of them (Lockett) averaged more than 10 yards per catch.

So the Rams signed long snapper Colin Holba to their practice squad, though longest-tenured Ram Jake McQuaide has not been on the injury report this week. Hm.

McQuaide is in the final year of his contract…this is an odd transaction in my mind. Obviously the Rams have a spare kicker as a COVID precaution but saw no reason to do the same w punter/LS/holder spots.
