    “Just being a dog (dawg?).”
-Cam Akers, asked about the similarities between him and Todd Gurley

Acknowledges he’s not the running back TG is yet, but has dedicated himself to working to get there for the Rams.

    Stu Jackson@StuJRams
Rams RB Cam Akers, asked about the similarities between him and Todd Gurley, said he’s had “a few conversations” with Gurley and tried to “take in and soak up as much information as I can” from him.

More Akers on Gurley: “Just knowing how he thinks mentally when he’s running the ball and how he prepares, I’d like to take a lot from that. I don’t think I’m at the level he’s at yet, but I’m trying to get there. I want to be there and I’m working to get there.”

In addition to Todd Gurley, Cam Akers said running backs he watched and tried to emulate when adding things to his game were Zeke Elliott, Dalvin Cook and Alvin Kamara.

“I just like to watch full-package guys. Guys who can do it all and aren’t one-dimensional.”

Cam Akers – former high school star quarterback, now running back – says if he needs to get called upon in the emergency QB situation that Sean McVay joked about this week he’d be ready.

Summer must-haves for the Los Angeles Rams fan

LA Rams News: Team waives DB Levonta Taylor to make room for OLB Lewis
by Bret Stuter 49 seconds ago

In LA Rams News: The team waived DB Levonta Taylor today, an expected move to restore OLB Terrell Lewis to the active roster

The LA Rams‘ roster started the day at 80 players. That’s the maximum ceiling for rosters in training camp until the team must pare down to the final 53. The only trouble? OLB Terrell Lewis, a projected impact player, and a likely starter at some point this season is on the COVID-19/reserve list. Since he doesn’t count against the 80, we cited the fact that his restoration would mean that the Rams would need to cut one more player. The news of such a cut occurred today.

While this is a positive sign that Lewis has tested negative and is ready to come back, it’s disappointing that the promising talents of Levonta Taylor won’t benefit the Rams this season.
    Taylor had great promise

Levonta Taylor had some buzz about him when the Rams signed him after the 2020 NFL Draft. After all, he is a 5-foot-10 190 pound defensive back whose background as both safety and cornerback truly seemed to be a custom fit for the Rams 2020 defense. At one point, the buzz about Taylor was as optimistic as a round-one prospect. But he suffered a back injury, followed by a nagging hamstring injury, which dropped him from star cornerback to intriguing safety.

While he was not drafted, he was one of many undrafted players who was projected to be selected on day three. He was one of the players whose talent helped him mask other deficiencies, such as biting on double moves and failing to recognize route breaks.

While it’s possible that Taylor could be signed to another team, or even to their practice squad, it’s unlikely that the Rams move today will open the option to sign on with the Rams practice squad.

How do the Rams still not have a permanent training facility in LA?

    Vincent Bonsignore@VinnyBonsignore
In their defense, the necessary land required in the preferred region means that land actually being availabile, rolls and rolls of political red tape and, oh by the way, they are footing the entire $5 billion bill for @SoFiStadium
    (It’ll happen)

Per source, DB Marqui Christian signed w/ the #Bears. Christian could challenge to start at safety. Very versatile player that saw time at nickel and safety for the Rams. Christian is also a standout special teams

NFL’s success in COVID-19 testing likely is boosted by the numbers of players, coaches, and staff who have the antibodies from a prior infection; if/when the antibodies wear off, another positive test becomes possible

The #49ers are bringing in WR Tavon Austin for a workout with hopes to sign him, sources tell me and
@MikeGarafolo. The former #Cowboys and #Rams speedster could land in SF if all works out.

    from https://theramswire.usatoday.com/2020/08/12/la-rams-terrell-lewis-covid-test-hard-knocks/

It was revealed on Tuesday’s episode of “Hard Knocks” that Lewis did indeed test positive for the coronavirus and that the Rams planned to hold him out for 10 days. After the episode aired, Lewis went on Twitter to let everyone know that he’s feeling good and “back in action,” politely asking people to relax before panicking.

No OTAs. No preseason games. The season is a month away. Is that enough time for a rookie running back to learn Sean McVay’s system?

“If I had to, a week would be enough time.”

What would spring football mean for guys who need a season in order to improve their NFL chances? It means that you could be playing football for almost a full year with almost no time off. Rookie year is hard enough & your chances of injury would Rocket

    Cowboys updated DL:

    DE: Everson Griffen
    DT: Gerald McCoy
    DT: Dontari Poe
    DE: Demarcus Lawrence

    Evan Kaplan@EpKap
Everson Griffen lined up as a right DE for 91% of snaps in the last 2 seasons, had all 13.5 sacks from that spot.

DeMarcus Lawrence lined up as a left DE for 91% of snaps in the last 2 seasons, had all 15.5 sacks from that spot.

That seems like a good pairing.

    J.B. Long@JB_Long
Decent first test for the Rams offensive line.

Washington, Philly, and Dallas have LOADED defensive lines.

    Todd Archer@toddarcher
Everson Griffen brings quality to a defensive front that will need it. The Cowboys’ returning defensive linemen had a combined eight sacks last season, matching Griffen’s total with Minnesota last year. DeMarcus Lawrence had five, Dorance Armstrong two and Tyrone Crawford one.

    from https://www.nfl.com/news/falcons-could-limit-todd-gurley-s-workload-in-training-camp

[a] veteran reporter noted that during the early phases of the Falcons’ workouts, Gurley “walked with a noticeable limp and wore a compression sock on his left leg, yet he showed speed and explosion during drills.”

The juxtaposition of Gurley walking with a limp but looking good during drills is, unfortunately, the reality with the running back at this point. He’ll show brief flashes but hasn’t been as consistently explosive as he was earlier in his career.

Atlanta has room in its backfield to highlight Gurley, but given his injury history, it’s likely he’ll share snaps with Ito Smith, Brian Hill and Qadree Ollison. With no preseason to test out the group, we’ll have to wait for Week 1 to see what Quinn’s full plan is for Gurley.

Rams S John Johnson III on DC Brandon Staley’s philosophy:

“The defense shouldn’t be reactive. We should be the hammer.”

    Eric Williams@eric_d_williams
Rams S John Johnson III when asked how new DC Brandon Staley will change defense: “In the past, Coach Staley came from Denver and Chicago. I think we have better guys on defense than he had in both of those places. So just picture what they were doing, but with better guys.”

    Stu Jackson@StuJRams
Rams S John Johnson III said the COVID-19-forced shutdown of team facilities earlier this offseason didn’t impact his rehab on last October’s shoulder injury.

He was “pretty far along” in the process & stable pre-shutdown, so his focus around that time was on building strength.

    from https://theramswire.usatoday.com/2020/08/14/rams-burgess-fuller-rookie-secondary-camp/

Burgess and Fuller are in a tough spot after their first NFL offseason was mostly virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic, but they’ve already made a strong impression on Johnson in the first two weeks of practice.

“They came in ready to go,” Johnson told reporters Thursday. “They must have come from good college programs or high school, whatever it is, but they came in ready to go. Great athletes, you can move them around, so I’m excited for their future.”

Johnson shared some insight on both rookies and what makes them good defenders.

“They’re both good guys. They’re smart, hard-working,” he said. “I will say, things that jumped out to me – Jordan is long. He can run. He looks like he could cover sideline-to-sideline. He can come out the post, so I’m excited to see what he could do. And Burgess, he’s versatile, he’s quick, he’s fast and I wasn’t expecting that either. I didn’t study them, obviously, but both of them, I’m very impressed with.”

Gurley is unfortunate. He was a great one who lost out to injury. He coulda been on the Rams Mt. Rushmore of RBs alongside McCutcheon, Dickerson, Faulk, Jackson, and of course Greg Hill, if not for injury. (Bettis was also short-lived).
