One leftover from the Rams DC search: coach Sean McVay had great interest in Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonard. Ultimately, Brandon Staley and the Fangio D was the right fit for his staff.

But Leonard, the ex-Jets/Ravens safety, is 100% a name to watch going forward.

Report: Rams, Cowboys both want Stan Drayton as RBs coach

Report: Rams, Cowboys both want Stan Drayton as RBs coach

The Cowboys and Rams both covet the service of Stan Drayton as their running backs coach.

Hall of Famer Gil Brandt of NFL Media reports that the teams ā€œappear to be a in a warā€ for Drayton.

Drayton is the associate head coach and run game coordinator at the University of Texas, where he has coached since 2017. He was with the Bears in 2015-16.

His only other NFL experience came early in his career with the Packers. He was assistant offensive quality control/special teams coach from 2001ā€“2003 in Green Bay.

Drayton coached Ezekiel Elliott at Ohio State, where Drayton spent four seasons.

The Cowboys had Gary Brown as their running backs coach the past seven seasons, while Skip Peete coached the Ramsā€™ running backs the past four seasons.

From a former head coach Brandon Staley worked for:

I think the great thing about Brandonā€™s defense is that itā€™s multiple. Itā€™s driven by matchups, which is the NFL game. It can be what it needs to be, when it needs to be that…. I would expect to see a variety of fronts. I would expect to see a variety of pressures, some exotic pressures on third down and some different coverages, multiple coverages and a team that adjusts based on formations and motions and alignments.

I posted the whole interview here. It’s very encouraging: http://theramshuddle.com/topic/hammond-insight-into-new-rams-defensive-coordinator-brandon-staley/

    from https://www.therams.com/news/donald-named-to-pfwa-s-all-nfl-all-nfc-teams

Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald has been named to the Professional Football Writers of America’s (PFWA) All-NFL team, the organization announced Monday.

Donald’s placement on the team for the fifth consecutive season is the longest current streak of any active of player.

The All-NFL nod from the PFWA marks the second league-wide honor for the 2019 season for Donald, who was also named a First Team All-Pro by the Associated Press for the fifth-straight season on Jan. 3.

from PFF: Offseason needs for all 32 teams

    https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-offseason-needs-for-all-32-nfl-teams-2020

Los Angeles Rams: Offensive linemen that can get the Ramsā€™ line back to its 2018 form
    Secondary needs: edge defender, linebacker

The Ramsā€™ offensive line was one of the better units in the league in 2018, and their offense flourished behind it as a result. That all fell apart this past season, with injuries and personnel changes taking a toll on the group. They finished the season 31st in PFFā€™s offensive line rankings, and now, the most consistent player from the line ā€” Andrew Whitworth ā€” is set to be a free agent at 38 years old. There isnā€™t a position on the line that the Rams canā€™t look to improve on in 2020.

They should also look to add some new pieces defensively. Edge defender becomes an area of need with the impending free agency of Dante Fowler Jr., but even if the Rams retain him, they can look to improve the other starting edge slot over Clay Matthews (54.2 overall grade in 2019) and Samson Ebukam (66.7). At linebacker, the Rams should make every effort to re-sign Cory Littleton. Since 2018, his coverage grade of 90.1 trails only Lavonte David and Luke Kuechly among linebackers with 1,000 or more defensive snaps.

Yeah these threads usually include lottsa twitter bits but it doesn’t have to be just that. I suppose anything brief and interesting that doesn’t seem like “start a thread” material fits.

The Rams are going bold in hiring 37-year-old defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. What are they getting? According to one of Staley’s former bosses, an “incredible, incredible football mind.”

PRO FOOTBALL FOCUS SAYS RAMS HAD ONE OF NFL’S BEST COVERAGE DEFENSES IN REGULAR SEASON

The Rams’ ability to defend opposing passing attacks during the 2019 season ranked among the best in the NFL.

According to scouting service Pro Football Focus (PFF), the Rams’ defense posted the eighth-highest team coverage grade for the 2019 regular season.

“After trading starting corners Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters six weeks into the season, the Rams’ secondary improved their then 12th-ranked coverage grade of 68.6 to a more respectable and eighth-ranked 84.7 by the close of the regular season,” analyst Solomon Wilcots wrote.
