    Man, this season has been wild. While the offense has been driving Rams fans up the wall, QB Jared Goff and company have been able to get the ball in the end zone when they’ve gotten close. It helps to have RB Todd Gurley II and WR Cooper Kupp! Currently, the Rams are 11th in the NFL, scoring 62.1% of their possessions inside the 20.

    I was at that game. The Rams finished 13-3 in the Super Bowl Championship season of 1999. I managed to travel to three of their games that season (Detroit, Cincy, Philly) and defying all odds they managed to lose two of them.

    Going into that game, the Bengals were the only team who had been worse than the Rams over the previous 10 seasons. Knowing they had suffered as much as we have fostered a feeling of kinship with their fans. Many of them were wearing T shirts that said “Coslet sucks, Brown swallows” (Head Coach Bruce Coslet, Owner Mike Brown). There were also a lot of “bag heads”. I assumed this was in response to the haplessness of the Bengals but as it turns out, many people there are just extremely ugly.

    The Rams won 38-10 and it wasn’t that close. I think that was the first time I ever saw the Rams win in person.

    Here’s a look at some of the noteworthy Rams-centric assessments as we approach the halfway point of the 2019 season.

    RAPP GETS BIGGER ROLE

    The depth chart got shaken up with safety John Johnson III getting put on injured reserve. While his absence created more opportunities for Marqui Christian, rookie Taylor Rapp also saw increased involvement as well.

    Per PFF, Rapp played a season-high 54 snaps against the Falcons last week. He was most effective against the run, posting a season-best grade of 68.9 in addition to a season-best 83.6 tackling grade. His 35 snaps in coverage were also most for him in a single game this season.

    Before Johnson’s injury, defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said Rapp would see time on the field even though he was a backup because Rapp has earned it. It seems that trend will continue.

    EDWARDS GRADES OUT WELL IN DEBUT

    Making his NFL regular season debut, rookie David Edwards held his own in his first career start.

    According to Voice of the Rams J.B. Long, Edwards’ overall offensive grade of 60.9 was highest by a Rams left guard this season. Second-year offensive lineman began the year as the starter before suffering a season-ending ACL and MCL injury against the 49ers in Week 6, with Jamil Demby also seeing action at that spot.

    Edwards is off to a promising start, and he’ll likely have a chance to build on it this week against the Bengals.

    FOWLER HAS BEST GAME OF SEASON

    Considering how he fared statistically against the Falcons, it likely comes as no surprise that Dante Fowler Jr.’s performance graded out as his best of the season in three key categories.

    The former Florida standout posted a 90.9 pass rushing grade, a 90.6 overall defensive grade and a 76.6 run defense grade – all season highs – following his first three-sack game of his career. He also added three tackles for loss and a forced fumble.

    Looks like his first game reunited with CB Jalen Ramsey made a big difference.

    You might recall our preseason question: Can this defense be elite?

    Wouldn’t say they’re there yet. But despite some injuries, they’ve got a chance.

    Sean McVay says Taylor Rapp is 'just going to continue to get better'

    “I think Taylor Rapp taking on added snaps, really did a great job,” McVay said on Monday. “I thought Marqui did a great job in a lot of our known passing situations, you can just feel his range. Taylor Rapp is just a player that’s just going to continue to get better. Like we’re talking about with David Edwards, mature beyond his years for a rookie and doing a lot of good things from those two.”

    Rapp is a very reliable tackler, missing just one tackle this season on 32 attempts, a missed tackle rate of 3.1%. That’s an important trait for a safety, being the last line of defense.

    well i just gotta say. the news about rapp and edwards is just awesome. just totally awesome.

    if the rams can develop these 2 guys into solid starters. well shoot. who needs first rounders?

    i figured rapp was the starter last week. regardless of injuries for him to grab a starting spot this fast is impressive. edwards too.

    Rams hope to get Clay Matthews back after Week 9 bye

    Clay Matthews’s initial timetable to return was 4-6 weeks with Sean McVay saying he’d be out “at least a month.” Nearly three weeks removed from the day he was first injured, Matthews remains on track with that recovery timeline. McVay provided an update on Matthews Friday, saying the Rams hope to get their sack leader back after the Week 9 bye.
    “Clay’s going to continue to be out, we’re hopeful to get him back after the bye,” McVay said from London.

    The NFC West goes into Week 8 as the only division in the NFL without a losing team. Six other divisions have multiple teams with losing records.

    Meantime, the 49ers, Seahawks, Rams and Cardinals have combined for an 18-8-1 start, and three of those losses were head-to-head.

    Under Sean McVay, the Rams are 4-0 going into and coming out of a bye.

    Very cool note from Travis Langer, of award-winning Rams P.R. department fame, about left tackle Andrew Whitworth. Sunday, he has a chance to be the 12th starter in NFL history to defeat all 32 franchises.

    Big Whit has been very transparent about how his tenure in Cincinnati ended after 11 seasons. And his teammates want this one for him.

    One of the revelations of the Rams being more multiple with their offensive personnel lately has been the blocking ability of Johnny Mundt. At 233 pounds, he’s the lightest of the Rams trio, but that didn’t stop him from pancaking Vic Beasley last week. And according to Pro Football Focus, he graded even better in pass protection.

    per NFL’s Next Gen Stats, Cincinnati rushers have been stuffed on 31.3% of their attempts, easily the highest rate in the league.

    Just saw Aaron Donald being interviewed by Osi Umenyiora on the BBC, Osi starts off by asking AD how does it feel to be the best player in the NFL, AD responds by saying “that was last year”. That is the perfect attitude, all the accolades mean nothing its all about getting better for AD.
