Another extension for the Rams, who reach agreement with TE Tyler Higbee on a 4-year deal that ties him to the team through 2023 season and makes him a top 10 paid TE, per source. Rams and @ErikBurkhardt finalizing deal this morning.

This had been expected for some time. Tyler Higbee is a player the #Rams have expressed sincere interest in locking up for awhile now.

    Ian Rapoport@RapSheet
The #Rams and TY Tyler Higbee agree to terms on a 4-year extension with a base value of $31.025M, sources say. He gets a max of more than $36M with plenty of incentives with a guarantee of $15.5M. A nice deal for a good young player.

Wasn’t it last year they almost traded him? They wanted a 6th round pick and the other team offered a 7th round pick, so the trade never happened. I am fine with them extending him, just a bit surprised.

Given how salaries increase, slotting in at number 10 with the last contract may be about right. It will look cheaper in two years and is one less position they have to find.

I must have shown some additional growth from last year until now.

Higbee’s deal raises some interesting questions.

Just to cover the basics and get it down in black and white: 2nd contracts just go up every year. Teams don’t rank the player in relation to others, if he’s a starter he just gets what the 2nd contract market is that year for his position. So for example Wilson got 22 M in 2015 and Carr got 25 M in 2017. Was Carr considered better than Wilson? No…in 2017 qbs were getting more than they were in 2015. That’s it. It’s just next guy up.

So if Higbee were valued as a starting RECEIVING TE he would have gotten a 2nd contract that ranked in the top 2-3. He would just get what the next guy up gets. He didn’t. He got what 2nd contracts for starting TEs were going for before 2016. It would be as if Wentz got Foles money to sign a 2nd contract

Most likely that means he’s NOT valued as a top receiving TE and they don’t intend to make him into one. His deal is below market value for that. Compare that to other recent deals the Rams made. Cooks got more or less exactly what starting WRs were getting on second contracts for 2016. Hav got more or less exactly what ROTs were getting his year.

Since they like Higbee, that most likely means they see him more as supplementing the OL as kind of 6th lineman type TE, and that they value that. Like Celek was with the Eagles before he retired. But guys like that don’t get market value 2nd contracts for the year they’re up.

My first reaction was surprise at the size of the contract.

And my second reaction was to put it in the category of “They Have Given Me No Reason To Doubt That They Know What They Are Doing.” This ain’t Martz/Armey.

    Snead has been here…seven years?

I have watched football since 1968, and apart from that incredible accumulation of talent in the early 70s, Snead has a better track record than anybody else.

    So…welcome to the Rams, Tyler.

As i recall you once posted a photo of, either you, or your brother, in a blue and white rams helmet.

Anyone who once had a blue and white rams helmet gets to think any damn thing they want. So, either you,
or your brother, gets to have blind faith in Snead or Fisher or Taje Allen or John St.Clair or anyone you want. Its in the message board Terms of Use. Its called the 1968-Rule

I just had to post those pictures on Facebook a few months ago. I lost a bet with Nittany over something.
