AND. A running back can play with an arthritic knee. Faulk did. So this is not a case of Gurley being diminished as a resource in 2019. It CAN flare up, BUT they can also manage it, AND he can be productive when it DOESN’T flare up. So Gurley is not “done.” We ought to see a couple of more productive years, as we did with Faulk back then.
The thing is, though, a back can play with that. Faulk did. In fact they sat him the summer of 2001 for 3 weeks because of a surgical knee acting up, and he had a good season that year. In Gurley’s case, yeah it CAN flare up, BUT they can also manage it, AND he can be productive when it DOESN’T flare up.
And again, in 2001 Faulk was worse than Gurley is now and still had a great year.
Arthritic conditions can and do vary from player to player, depending on a whole bunch of other factors. Faulk’s knees in 2001 were far, far worse than Gurley’s are now, yet he was productive in 2001.
Again, Faulk in 2001–he did have issues with his knee in training camp, they sat him, he rested, and was fine for the 2001 season….Having said that, yeah some guys (but it’s not many) are a little over-alarmist about this and they think he can’t play. Well, yeah he can.
MAX: It may act up from time to time, but I think it will be managed so he can play at top form for a few more years.
I agree with the statement I red-bolded.
The trainer, the player, and the coaches expect TG to play well this year, apparently at or near his accustomed level, and all talk is about managing him–his practices and carries. The goal is to have him closer to full steam in the post-season, but the level of play is expected to be the same or near it. The trainer also has a particular training regimen that helps in this situation
PA: I thought the crux of my post was “Gaines seems to think it’s no big deal”.
He thinks that with work Gurley can have a good season this year. Except—no one here is saying otherwise.
But then this entire thread I have been saying the guy can play with a knee like that–in fact, Faulk and Holt could still play when their knees were far worse than Gurley’s.
So because you don’t buy their “narrative” (on no basis whatsoever), you also don’t buy Gaines’s claim that Gurley will contribute at a high level in 2019?
