Ghost Cat Gone: Eastern Cougar Officially Declared Extinct

Say good-bye to the “ghost cat.” This week the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officially declared the eastern cougar (Puma concolor couguar) to be extinct and removed it from the endangered species list.

This news, sad though it is, has been a long time coming. The big cats, once native to New England, were last verifiably observed back in 1938. The service first concluded that the species was extinct back in 2011, and then proposed removing its protected status in 2015. This latest step, taken after extensive scientific review and public comment, completes the eastern cougar’s long journey into the night….

When I lived in PA there were occasional sightings by people I would consider credible and the same is true here in Vermont.

But the lack of physical evidence is telling.

I would like to see mountain lions reintroduced here in the east. Wolves too.

RIP, Eastern Cougars. While I think it would be neat to still have large cats here in CT (especially with how many deer we now have everywhere), the thought of having to worry about an 80 lb feline jumping out of a tree onto my back as I bring my recyclables to the curb is terrifying.

Maybe if I had a Bowie Knife or a six shooter with me, I’d feel better, but I’m sure the record shows that even before we eradicated the big cats from New England, there were few to zero attacks of cougars on humans.

I’m conficted here…

I would support a bill that would introduce them in the tens of thousands below the Mason-Dixon Line.
